Since 2018, the Family Adventure Garden has been a place where kids can roam, climb, splash, and discover the wonders of nature. Spread across 2.5 acres, this lively outdoor space invites families to explore landscapes inspired by San Antonio, the Hill Country, and South Texas. Adventure is waiting around every corner. Kids can tumble down Brown | Carrington Tumble Hill, build with rocks and sticks in The Joan and Herb Kelleher Foundation Dry Rock Creek, splash through the creek-shaped splash pad called The Greehey Family Foundation No Name Creek, climb Limestone Ledge to the top of Semmes Prickly Pear Peak for a bird’s-eye view of the Garden, or let their imaginations run wild at the Alexander Thistle Theater and Moorman Playhouses. Designed for hands-on, open-ended play, the Family Adventure Garden gives children space to stretch both their bodies, get a little messy, and make joyful discoveries in the great outdoors.

The Family Adventure Garden was designed to be a living model of our region ’ s watershed. Check it out by following waters journey from surface to the underground Edwards Aquifer — from raining at Thunder Ridge, flowing down No Name Creek, disappearing into Retama Recharge, springing up into Cypress Creek, filling Dry Rock Creek in heavy rains, then harvested at the Watering Hole.

Among the many play areas of the Family Adventure Garden that kids will discover are two sand boxes. Did you know that sand boxes are among the oldest forms of dedicated public playgrounds, appearing in Europe and the United States in the mid to late 19 th century?

For the curious garden guest, don ’ t forget to explore the rock formations of No Name Creek where you might find actual fossils that were brought from rivers of the Texas Hill Country, just waiting to be discovered!
