The Garden of Infinite Music
The Garden of Infinite Music is an evolving musical composition created from the electrical activity of a living plant: the Garden’s extraordinary Ponytail Palm in the Palm and Cycad Pavilion of the Lucile Halsell Conservatory.

Throughout the day on August 8, Artist Aric Attas captured electrical patterns produced by the plant’s living processes. These patterns reflect the activity constantly taking place within the plant, from the movement of water and nutrients to photosynthesis and other processes that help the plant grow, respond, and survive. The patterns were fed into a generative music system, where they continuously shape and transform the composition. The music has no fixed beginning or end. Throughout August, it will continue to unfold, each moment emerging from the living processes of the Ponytail Palm. It does not repeat.
The Ponytail Palm gives the music its unique character—grounded yet expansive, organic yet always changing. By translating activity within a living plant into sound, the installation offers a way to experience something that normally exists beyond our perception.
The Garden of Infinite Music invites us to listen differently, and to consider the hidden processes, complexity, and mystery of the living world around us.
The Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) may look like a palm, but it is actually a succulent tree in the asparagus family native to Mexico. Its bulbous trunk stores water, helping it survive in dry environments.
SABG is home to an extraordinary Ponytail Palm in the Palm and Cycad Pavilion. Its base measures 27 feet in circumference, making it one of the largest cultivated specimens in the world. Estimated to be more than 50 years old, this remarkable plant is a living botanical treasure.
For The Garden of Infinite Music, artist Aric Attas gathered the electrical activity of this very plant and transformed its patterns into music, allowing visitors to experience the activity of a living organism in a completely new way.
