Instructor: Emma Schmidt
About the Artist: As a native Texan artist with a deep love for nature, Emma draws inspiration from the world around her to create hand drawn designs that tell meaningful stories. With a background in painting from Savannah College of Art & Design, she has grown her art practice through a range of mediums, including intricate inked maps, watercolors, illustration and large-scale painted murals. Her primary medium is illustrated cartography, creating maps that tell stories, give direction and chart memories. Emma focuses much of her illustrated map work on highlighting a geographic place’s uniqueness, with a keen attention to the native flora and fauna. Botanical illustrations play a central role in her art practice and she is passionate about creating drawings or paintings that elevate the beauty of native Texas plants. Stylistically, she draws inspiration from illustrated manuscripts, vintage maps and antique botanical engravings.
