Why Rare and Endangered Plant Collections Matter

Our planet is home to an estimated 10 to 50 million living species. None of them exist in a vacuum. Every living thing is woven into a delicately balanced network called the biosphere. But today, the rate of plant extinction is significantly higher than historical levels.

At the San Antonio Botanical Garden, we care for more than ___ rare and endangered plant species. This isn’t just about preserving pretty flowers—it’s a critical mission to prevent permanent extinction and safeguard our ecosystem.

What Causes Plants to Become Endangered?

While extinction can happen naturally, human activity and environmental pressures have dramatically accelerated the threat. Several interconnected forces drive this decline:

  • Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: The leading threat to plant survival. Converting natural landscapes into agricultural fields, urban developments, logging areas, or mining sites completely destroys native habitats. When a habitat disappears, it triggers a cascade effect: local pollinators lose their food source, and the wildlife dependent on those pollinators suffer in turn.
  • Climate Change: Rapid shifts in temperature and precipitation disrupt a plant’s natural lifecycle and distribution. Species restricted to very specific soil types or microclimates often cannot migrate or adapt quickly enough.
  • Invasive Species: Non-native plants aggressively compete with Texas natives for water and nutrients. For instance, invasive buffelgrass has severely reduced the populations of the rare, native prostrate milkweed in South Texas.
  • Overharvesting and Law Enforcement Issues: Many plants are over-collected for ornamental, medicinal, or commercial use. Entire families—such as cacti, orchids, and pitcher plants—require protection under international frameworks like CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to stop illegal trade.

The Ripple Effect: Consequences of Losing Plant Species

When we lose a single plant species, we risk collapsing a whole ecological chain. Plants are the anchors of our food webs and serve as “keystone species.” Removing them can fundamentally shift the entire wildlife community.

How We Protect Endangered Species: In-Situ vs. Ex-Situ

Protecting imperiled plants requires a multi-faceted approach. Conservation generally falls into two primary strategies:

  1. In-Site (In-Situ) Conservation

The best way to save a plant is to keep its native home healthy. This involves creating protected areas like national parks, managing invasive weeds, and executing prescribed burns. Many Texas prairies, savannas, and woodlands depend on regular fire intervals to clear out encroaching woody plants and maintain an open ecosystem. Without regular monitoring, downward population trends would go completely unnoticed until it’s too late.

  1. Off-Site (Ex-Situ) Conservation

When a species becomes so rare that its natural population is at risk of vanishing entirely—or when its local pollinators disappear—we must step in directly.

This is where the San Antonio Botanical Garden shines. As a proud partner of organizations like the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC), our botanists actively rescue imperiled seed and plant material. We propagate these seedlings off-site under expert supervision before safely introducing them back into secure wild habitats.

What causes plants to become endangered or threatened

Several factors. One of the most significant factors is habitat loss and fragmentation.

Conversion of natural habitats to agricultural or urban areas, logging, mining activities leads to destruction of plant habitats, making it difficult for them to survive.

Loss of plant habitats also affects the pollinators and seed dispersers that rely on these plants, and in turn also negatively impacts the animals that depend on these pollinators as a food source – affecting the overall ecosystem.

Climate change another significant threat to plant species.

Chance in temperature and precipitation patterns affect plant’s life cycle, distribution, and interactions with other species. Some plant species may not be able to adapt, resulting in decline (threatened) or extinction.

Invasive species pose significant threat to native plant species. Invasive plants compte for resources such as water and nutrients, leading to decline of native species. Can also alter natural fire regime and nutrient cycling, further disrupting ecosystem.

Overharvesting another significant threat to plant species. Many plant species harvested for medicinal, ornamental, or commercial purposes, leading to decline in populations.

In some cases, the collection of plant specimens for scientific purpose scan also contribute to decline of endangered species.

Consequences of losing endangered species of plants

What Can Be Done to Protect Endangered Species of Plants?

Protecting endangered plant species requires a multi-faceted approach. Conservation efforts can include the protection and restoration of habitats, the implementation of policies to regulate the collection and trade of endangered plant species, and the creation of protected areas.

Preserving habitats is crucial for the protection of plant species. Protected areas such as national parks and reserves can provide a safe haven for endangered species. Habitat restoration efforts can include reforestation, wetland restoration, and the control of invasive species.

Education and awareness campaigns can also play a significant role in the protection of endangered plant species. Raising awareness about the importance of plant biodiversity can help foster a sense of responsibility among individuals and communities. Education programs can also help increase knowledge about endangered plant species and their conservation.

International agreements and policies can also be effective in protecting endangered plant species. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement aimed at regulating the trade of endangered species. The agreement provides a framework for countries to work together to protect endangered species and ensure that their trade does not threaten their survival.

One way for individuals to get involved in conservation efforts is by participating in volunteer programs. Several organisations offer conservation volunteering opportunities.

Endangered plant species are a significant concern worldwide. The loss of plant biodiversity can have significant consequences for our ecosystem, economy, and cultural heritage. Protecting endangered plant species requires a concerted effort from individuals, communities, and policymakers worldwide. By working together, we can help protect endangered plant species and preserve the valuable ecosystem services they provide.

Habitat Conservation

A great many of the rare plants that occur on the national forests and grasslands are best conserved by keeping their native habitats healthy. Sometimes the only action necessary is to conserve and protect existing rare plant habitat and to conduct periodic monitoring to ensure that rare plant populations are still thriving. Periodic monitoring of healthy rare plant populations can protect their long term existence, by detecting downward trends or alteration of their habitat which would otherwise go unnoticed.

In some cases, conserving and protecting the existing habitat of rare species, such as meadows, prairies or savannas, may include conducting prescribed burns because these areas depend on fire to maintain their openness. This is especially important because habitat may disappear or change due to fire suppression practices.

Some species and populations of rare plants, however, need more than habitat conservation. These plants need active management to reverse downward population trends. Periodic monitoring is essential to detecting the first signs of decline in rare plant populations and their habitats. Once we determine a particular set of corrective actions needed to reverse the decline of a rare plant population, we implement those necessary actions.

Sometimes habitat restoration is possible by removing weeds, or by simply allowing natural disturbance by fire, water, or wind to return to the ecosystem. In many of our savannas, woodlands, and prairie ecosystems, the exclusion of fire has led to such serious decline of disturbance-dependent plants that their continued existence is compromised. Removing encroaching woody plants and reintroducing fire have proven to help restore these fire-dependent communities and the plants, both common and rare, that rely on disturbance-dependent ecosystems.

Often, though, rare plants are restricted to special soil types, which are nearly impossible to recreate once the soil layers are churned up. Conservation of good quality habitat and maintenance of natural ecological processes in these habitats are our best hope for these substrate-specific rare plants.

Too often, the introduction of invasive species into rare plant habitats has had substantial adverse effects on rare plants, their populations, and habitats. The use of integrated pest management actions to eliminate and control invasive species will allow for the recovery of the community and its rare plants.

Off-site (ex situ) Conservation

In some cases, plants have declined to where they become very rare, with an increased possibility of individuals or an entire population disappearing from a site. For some rare plants, the disappearance of their pollinator is the cause of their rarity. In these cases, it may become necessary to propagate these plants off-site and replant the seedlings back into their habitats. Additionally, monitoring of pollinators at sites where the plant is successfully reproducing will allow us the option of introducing the pollinator back into that rare plant’s habitat.

Sometimes the threats facing a rare plant occur primarily on non-federal lands, where the Endangered Species Act provides only limited conservation authority for plants. In these cases, we may work with a partner such as the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC), to rescue plants or their seed when possible and place them into a CPC garden (ex-situ conservation). Off-site storage and cultivation of genetically appropriate plant material is a critical step in supporting restoration in the wild. The Center’s goal is to protect the most imperiled U.S. plants from extinction and restore them to secure habitats.

Law Enforcement

Full implementation and enforcement of national, international, and state laws protecting rare plants is critical to their successful conservation and recovery. Unethical or ignorant plant collection for horticultural or herbal uses has caused some plants to decline in the wild, leading to listing of some species of plants as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Over-collection of cacti, orchids, and carnivorous plants have resulted in the entire orchid, cacti and pitcher plant families being listed on Appendix 2 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The Forest Service works very closely with our horticulture partners in making the public aware of the rarity of many of these plants in their natural habitats. Together we encourage the conservation of these precious few. Many of these rare plants are available to the public through seed exchanges and specialty nurseries. Collection of rare plants on the national forests and grasslands is illegal. Permits for scientific research may be obtained in certain cases.

Although extinctions occur naturally, scientific evidence strongly indicates that the current rate of extinction is much higher than the natural or background rate of the past. The main force driving this higher rate of loss is habitat loss.

Benefits of Natural Diversity

How many species of plants and animals are there? Although scientists have classified approximately 1.7 million organisms, they recognize that the overwhelming majority have not yet been catalogued. Between 10 and 50 million species may inhabit our planet.

None of these creatures exists in a vacuum. All living things are part of a complex, often delicately balanced network called the biosphere. The earth’s biosphere, in turn, is composed of countless ecosystems, which include plants and animals and their physical environments. No one knows how the extinction of organisms will affect the other members of its ecosystem, but the removal of a single species can set off a chain reaction affecting many others. This is especially true for “keystone” species, whose loss can transform or undermine the ecological processes or fundamentally change the species composition of the wildlife community, including plants.
